[Busan] Naruse Mikio Retrospective

Though the circumstances are not very good to watch the variety of the art films in Korea, sometimes I feel we have some opportunities better than our thought. For example, you can watch non-English films more than any American moviegoers. Hong Kong noirs have got enthusiastic fandom in Korea before Quentin Tarantino introduced them as the source of his inspiration. It's much easier to watch Iranian films in Korea than in other so-called developed countries. Maybe the chance to glance the Mikio Naruse's world would not also be given so easily.

One of the most important Japanese film directors, Mikio NARUSE is considered as the master of melodramas, who had directed 89 titles for 37 years. At first his style didn't look apparent which made hime unappreciated, but over time he have got rediscovered and acclaimed for his artistic accomplishment as much as Yasziro Ozu and Akira Kurosawa. Film critic Jean-Pierre Limosin calls him the master of the masters versed in the use of light.

From September 1, Cinematheque Busan presents Naruse Mikio Retrospective. This rprogram screens his typical films including Floating Clouds, Yearning and Sound of the Mountain, which will show the height of his prominent craftsmanship , as well as his early films like The Gril on Everybody's Lips and Sincerity. According to the information on the Cinematheque's homepage, these two films will be shown through the new prints restored in 1990s, which have never been shown to the public for more than a half century since there were no posi prints.

This program runs to Sep. 17 and has no screening on Mondays. 4-5 screenings a day timed 11:00(Friday to Sunday), 13:00, 15:00, 17:00 and 19:00. I'll attach soon the plots the title and detatild schedule.

[Busan] B-Horror Party!!!

If you are fans for old, campy and cheap horror movies, here is the right, delightful feast for you. From Freaks by Tod Browing of 1932 to 1982's White Dog by Samuel Fuller, legendary and classical so-called B movies are screened for 20 days from July 20th till August 10. The total of 14 movies including Frankenstein's Bride(by James Whale) and The Haunting(by Robert Wise) will give you special pleasure againt mid-summer sultriness. Ticket price is \4,000 and there are four screenings per day. No screening on Mondays and at the last time on Thursdays.

[Busan] Werner Herzog Retrospective

Long time, No posts.

Werner Herzog's films are being screened in Cinematheque Busan these days, which were screened in Seoul in June. This program lasts till this weekend and I'm not sure if it has English subtitles. Considered as one of the oddest filmmakers, Werner Herzog came from New German Cinema which declared Oberhausen Manifesto, but his films have been different from those of other directors such as Wim Wenders, Volker Schlendorff or Rainer Werner Fassbinder. This program has 9 feature films including Aguirre: The Wrath of God and My Best Fiend, the documentary about Klaus Kinsi who was his persona and Nastasha Kinski's father, but no Fitzcarraldo.

As a slapstick comedian and great director, Jacque Tati made only 6 features and a few shorts but he "has positioned shyness to the place of ontological principles"(Andre Basin) and was such a magnificent director as Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton in the 20th century. Ahead of the times more than any other artists, he attempted the modernism art with the basis of public appeal of comic sense. This program will screen his whole feature films besides his 4 shorts at Cinematheque Busan, starting on Friday, June 16 to June 29. No screening on Wed., June 21 and on Mondays. Ticket price is \4,000 (\3,000 for membership).

The most original cineaste in the present Korean action films field, Director Seung-wan Ryoo has apparently demonstrated the vision violence and pleasure of action in the films from Die Bad(2000) to Buddy(2006, Chakpai) the soon-opening title. This program provides conversation with him about his filmmaking as well as the screening of his films and the films has influenced on his works.

Ticket price is \6,000 and Ryoo's ActionSchool, the package including the director's speech, is \10,000. Please be noticed that A Better Tomorrow and Project A are screened by DVD. No Enlgish subtitles are availbe for Korean films.

2006 CINE Rendez-vous

This program is one of the regular events of Seoul Art Cinema, showing "new films" which means both famous but unintroduced films and unknown films. A total of seven titles will be screened, which were screened once in 2004 but it's a kind of "Hello, again" program and as you know, great films should be opend again and again in order to meet more audience. Starts on Friday, April 21 to last till April 29. Ticket price is \6,000. Please be noticed that no English subtitles are available for French and Japanese films.

Hal Hartley for The Book of Life is the successor to John Cassavetes for New York-based American independent films. Maborosi is Hirokazu Kore-eda's 1995 movie who directed Nobody Knows, the winner for Best Actor prize at Cannes Film Festival in 2004, while Sogo Ishii is the heretic director in the Japanese film history. Bruno Dumont's Humanity won the Grand Prize of Jury, Best Actor prize and Best Actress prize at 1999 Cannes Festival. Gaspar Noe's controversial films are famouns for the shocking plot and scenes and Otar Iosseliani is the name the world has underestimated for so long time. Philippe Grandieux's Sombre is an fable about fanatic but lofty love.

Woody Allen's wonderful comic world

Do you know that the Woody Allen's film are screened in the center of Seoul?

It is very special opportunity in Korea to watch the Mr.Allen's films in theater through film print, 'cause Woody Allen's films have been unpopular in Korea for a long time. It is partially that his films have been considered "so American", more exactly, "so New Yorkerian", and I think the main reason is that it is concerned with the situation that moviegoers in Korea are almost young and it's not easy to watch classical movies in theater.

Anyway, Film Forum, another cinematheque in Seoul, provides screening for Woody's eight films from April 21 to May 2. Please be noticed that there is no screening for 3 days from April 28 to 30. Wednesday Cine Club is a monthly special screening at Cinematheque Busan, which began last month with Gloria directed by John Cassavetes. As the second screening, the April screening tilte, Rosetta directed by Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenn brothers will be screened at Cinematheque Busan on Wednesday April 19.(Tommorrow!)

This film is a story about young girl looking for a job who lives with an alcoholic mother. It demonstrates that true and heartful story can touch viewers without any technical skills.

The ticket price is \4,000 (membership price is \3,000). Time schedule is 11:30, 14:00, 16:30 and 19:00 and the last screening is priced \6,000 (\4,500 for membership) because it has a lecture of Director Kim Ji-wun.

Martin Scorses | Raging Bull (1980)

What did he fight for?

When I first watched this film ten years ago, I hated Jake La Motta. I didn't understand why he were doing such stupid and violent behaviors. Yes, Marty's directing was beautiful and the black and white scenes were terrific. What use, however, would it be if I don't understand what is going on and why the things happen? Jake was only a paranoid idiot hitting innocent people for his own failure. At that time, it was, at least, for me.

Now, I notice his rage, frustration, pain, and sadness. He is still an idiot and, it just makes me sadder and more painful. He didn't know why he desired the championship. His goal was the championship itself, not what it symbolyzes. Many people rush to succeed in money, honor, love, etc., but the so-called success eventually means self-respect, self-achievement and the realization that we should love somebody with all our heart, which are just embodied by some phisical objects. What he desired was the phisical obsject itself. He didn't know the meaning in it.

It is therefore consequent that he falls and falls to the ground. When he wins the belt is the moment he loses his goal and furthermore, his meaning of life. He's too foolish to realize the fact. He just attributes his loss, which he actually doesn't know that it is loss, to other people's alleged faults.

Man falling down doesn't see his own status. It's too late when s/he realizes what and where he is. When he got imprisoned and hit the wall crying "I'm idiot!" to himself, it was too late. He doesn't know what to do. Although life goes on even after that, it's not what he wants and what he expects. The glorious past became just past. He couldn't preserve the really valuable things. He was even unaware that what the valuable things are. Rather, he injured what he should look after himself. How foolish!

But the problem is that such an idiot is just another me. In fact, how would I know whether I'm falling down or losing the very valuable? That kind of foolishness is not his original feature, but the destiny of all men. This film doesn't follow only one man's rise and fall but also shows the tragedy of life itself with deep insight, moving the 25-year-later audience. It is the real reason why this film is a true masterpiece.

Luchino Visconti | Death in Venice (1971)

Based on the novel by Thomas Mann, modelling the great composer Gustav Mahler, this film follows the desire of an old composer named Gustav von Aschebach toward a beautiful Polish boy, Tadzio in Venice. That's all for plot, therefore some viewers may feel bored. But this film, as many fans agree, is so beautiful, beautiful, and beautiful.

Seeing Tadzio is pain for Gustav, because he has believed that aesthetic is produced by human's labor. His competitive Alfred friend argued that aesthetic is just natural, and exist above human's perspective. Now before Gustave is Tadzio, the aesthetic itself and avatar of the spritiaul and natural perfection. What can he do? He desires and desires, but only watch him and can't touch him and even give 'hello'. Then, what was his life and art so far?

When he got off the barbershop wearing thick makeup with his hair dyed, his oldness explicitly shows with ironic sense. "In all the world, there is no impurity so impure as old age," said Alfred. And he was right for Gustav.

Again, Afred said: "The evil is the other side of beauty." Yes, Venice is the beautiful city of water, but fatal disease is attacking people and nobody talks about it. Beautiful Tadzio is also fatally eating Gustav's spirit. Or lets his eyes open. The result? Death. In Venice.

It's a meaningful dilemma for Visconti, a communist and offspring of noble, to have made this film in his 60s. Does this film mean that he felt skeptic about his life-long belief? I don't know, but what I can surely say is that Gustav's agony is that of all artists in the world and is toward the unsolved nature of art.
